The Week in Low Carbon Commerce

April 15, 2024 - Boston Marathon Edition

Having named this venture “Decarbonizing Commerce,” and with a URL like Decarbonize.co, I often think about the issue of “carbon tunnel vision.” The intent was to highlight decarbonization as a driver of change in the retail and CPG industries—but not at the exclusion of other important climate and sustainability considerations.

I’m reminded of the risk of climate tunnel vision by two stories this week: Danone’s methane strategy, and an analysis by the Center for Active Stewardship of Costco, Target, Walmart, and Kroger emissions that arguing that carbon emissions alone can be less informative (or even misleading) versus other measures.

Separately, this week I'll be interviewing Tessa Callaghan, co-founder and CEO of Keel Labs, which makes fiber for textiles from seaweed. Have questions for her? Pop over to the Slack community and see my post in the #01-general channel.

OK — it’s a beautiful day, and I’m off to take my daughter to her first ever Boston Marathon.
